The animated movie “The Boy and the Beast” directed by Mamoru Hosoda will be made into a musical by Shiki Theater Company. As the first musical version of Studio Chizu’s work, it will be performed at the JR East Shiki Theater [Autumn] from April 2022.
This work is based on “The Boy and the Beast” released in 2015, and is the largest new original musical in the history of Shiki Theater Company.
Set in a different world where monsters live and in Shibuya, Tokyo, a 9-year-old boy, Kuta, who lost his mother and lived lonely, met Kumatetsu, a monster, and became a disciple of him in search of strength. It’s a story to do.
For this musical, creators from all fields such as special make-up, puppets, action, magic, and video will gather to express a wide variety of monsters, a different world full of festive feelings, and powerful battle scenes. It is said that a magnificent story is drawn with the expression unique to theater and overwhelming entertainment.

This time, the concept art of the stage set, which gives a glimpse of a part of the musical “The Boy and the Beast”, has been released. The stage set of Shibuten-gai, the world of monsters, is made with the concept of “If a boy, Kyuta, gets lost in the city on this stage …”.
Drawn by Takashi Ishihara, who is the device designer of this work, the “different world” where the monsters live is vividly expressed from the perspective of Kyuta. Ishihara commented, “I would be very happy if we could draw our customers into a different world.”
The musical “The Boy and the Beast” will be performed at the JR East Shiki Theater [Autumn] from April 30, 2022. Tickets will be on sale from February 5th.

When drawing “Shibuten-gai” as a performing art, the most conscious thing was that “a different world without letters, where monsters live”. We humans rely on letters and symbols, that is, “visually” to get information and judge things. Then, what are the monsters who do not rely on letters to judge? Isn’t it the “five senses”? The scent of nature that you tend to forget, especially when you are in the city. I wanted to overflow the city with the scents of flowers, soil, and cloth, not just food. Also, in the world we live in, there is no such thing as a blue structure as a structure. I would be very happy if we could draw customers into a different world by using the space surrounded by deep blue as the motif of Shibuten-gai.
