Your partner is cool.” However, it is “Orient” that such a royal road is overturned one after another. 』And talk about the charm of the Orient. (The full interview is posted below)

A world of turmoil. Hinomoto was dominated by the mysterious creature “Onigami” who suddenly came flying, and the samurai who resisted the demon was regarded as a great sinner and hated. As people worshiped the demons, Musashi had a dream in his heart. It is to create a “strongest samurai corps” with his childhood friend Kojiro and exterminate the demons. Like a samurai who once confronted the demon to regain freedom in Hinomoto. As Kojiro’s late father, Jisai, told me. However, it was also to fight the lies of the world …. It was

――First of all, please tell us your impressions when you read the original for the first time.
Uchida: Originally, I love works with a Japanese taste, so I started reading with excitement. I was very inspired by the dynamic paintings of Shinobu Otaka and the fantasy feeling unique to the “Orient” that was created. I’m also very attracted to the adventurous story.
Saito: Character modeling full of originality is also the charm of “Orient”, isn’t it? I think that shōnen manga has an image of “If you are the main character, you are hot-blooded. Your partner is cool.” However, it is “Orient” that such a royal road is overturned one after another. Moreover, the novelty is firmly linked to the core of the character, so I can really sympathize with it when reading. You can enjoy the wonderful manga power of Professor Otaka.
Uchida: There is also a lot of excitement as a shounen manga. A huge castle moves.
Saito: That’s right. I wondered if there was a castle, but there were vehicles like modern motorcycles. I think it’s a work that is irresistible for boys and lovers of cool things.
――Please tell us about the characters you are playing.
Saito: I think Kojiro Kanemaki, who I play, feels like a cool and nihilistic character at first glance. However, he is a life-sized boy, and he is a friendly character that is not the second one. He feels inferior to his partner Musashi’s behavior, is easily caught in a color scheme, and has a mysteriously high vitality (laughs). He has a hard time because of his bloodline, but including that, he feels reality in the part of “a person in the process of growth”.
Uchida: The appearance of Kojiro will change between episodes 1 and 2 and beyond.
Saito: The first and second episodes are mostly drawn from Musashi’s point of view. The impression from Musashi is also taken into consideration, and the cool impression may be strong. In the stories that follow, you can see Yancha and unadulterated figures, so I think he’s a smiling boy despite his cool appearance.
――What kind of character is Musashi played by Mr. Uchida?
Uchida: Of course, it has the “straight and hot-blooded” element that is the royal road of shōnen manga, but it is a character that has another aspect such as “I can’t read the air and say what I really mean”. I think the main character like Musashi is very rare in shōnen manga. Although it is touted as Neo Sengoku, the conflicts that the characters have have a part that everyone sympathizes with, and in a good way, non-real and real are mixed. I think that is spurring the unreadable excitement of “Orient”. Also, as mentioned in Saito-kun’s story, I think the character that is easy to get close to is Kojiro rather than Musashi. Musashi feels that he gives us “awareness and discoveries” through his actions, and I feel cool about his serious thinking and unwavering beliefs.
Saito: Musashi has a lot of monologues.
Uchida: That’s right. Especially in the early stages, there are many scenes where I interact with myself. However, he never bends himself, no matter how pinch he may be. The appearance of Musashi is very different from the main character that I have played so far, and I feel that it is very fresh.
――What are your impressions of each other’s characters?
Uchida: While Musashi has a solid ideal image of “samurai” in himself, I think Kojiro is a character who will find his ideal self from now on. He is a boy who can be expected to grow, and I think he will change steadily due to the influence of those around him.
Saito: In a sense, it may be Miha (laughs).
Uchida: That is also different from Musashi. In a good way, they don’t look alike.
Saito: Not everything is different, isn’t it? For example, when you’re hungry, both of you get into a bad mood and develop into a fight. There is a perfect balance between when you interact with nature and when you act in the opposite direction, so you’ll never get tired of watching them.
――What kind of impression does Mr. Saito have on the character Musashi?
Saito: Even though I’m still in my mid-teens, there are many moments when I feel that I’m a very adult. Not only Kojiro, but also the samurai girl Tsugumi Hattori, who will appear in the future, is a child who acts honestly or with momentum to her own feelings. On the other hand, Musashi often looks at things, especially human relationships, from a bird’s-eye view. Also, I have a high ability to verbalize my feelings. That’s why I can clearly show my intention, “I want to do this!”, But I’m interested in it even though I’m still young. Also, I think that Musashi, who has such a personality, is suitable for leaders, and I think that he will push the backs of Kojiro and others.
――By the way, was Mr. Saito a leader type when you were a student? Was it a supporter type?
Saito: He was the type who didn’t want to take more responsibility than he had, so he was sometimes recommended by the student council president, but he stubbornly refused (laughs). He often took up positions such as Vice Chairman and Deputy Director instead.
Uchida: When I was a junior high school student, I ran for the student council president and took up the post. I think I was a director when I was a high school student.
Saito: Really !? Did you long for a leader?
Uchida: I wonder if there was a feeling that I wanted to stand out (laughs). Apart from that, I also have a strong desire to convey my opinion to everyone. I thought it was the fastest way to become a student council president or general manager, so I felt like I was running for a position.
Saito: What did you want to convey when you became the student council president?
Uchida: At that time, my junior high school didn’t have a good relationship between teachers and students. Some students said, “Teachers treat students equally!” But Uchida thought, “No, teachers are also humans. It’s natural that they have likes and dislikes. If you want to build a good relationship with teachers, you should communicate more with your students.” Moreover, at that time I thought that the idea was absolutely correct (laughs). So I aimed to be the student council president to convey my thoughts to all the students.
Saito: Did you actually tell?
Uchida: It was told at a place like a whole school rally. However, Uchida, who was satisfied with that, became a useless leader who just nodded “I think that’s okay” for the various proposals raised by the students (laughs).
Saito (laughs). Well, it feels like it’s going through my own intentions, it’s just Musashi. I can really sympathize with Kojiro’s step-down personality and inferiority complex with Musashi, and I play a good role that makes it easy for each other to feel.
――It seems that the two of you are on good terms even in private, but was it easy to express the feeling of being a partner of Musashi and Kojiro during dubbing?
Uchida: Of course, we don’t project our relationship to the characters because they are just characters. However, I think that the scene of “Orient” was quite early in terms of quickly grasping the atmosphere as a close friend.
Saito: That’s right. I think that it was because we knew each other well that we could soon have a breathtaking play. In other words, I think the three main players, including Rie Takahashi, who plays Tsugumi, have similar feelings about what they like and what is interesting. Musashi, Kojiro, and Tsugumi often interact with each other in a comedy touch, but we, who are acting, also enjoy the feeling of “fitting” many times. Oh, but I wonder if Mr. Takahashi sometimes doesn’t understand … It’s difficult to explain in words, but it’s a cosmic idea (laughs).
Uchida: That’s interesting again, though. It’s a good stimulus.
Saito: The “Orient” team is really close.
――Please tell us the highlights of the first episode.
Uchida: While the first episode explains the world of “Orient”, the story is slow and exciting, and I think you’ll be absorbed in it so quickly that you can finish watching it. At the end, the moment when Kojiro and the dialogue are matched, there is no sense of expectation for the second episode. On the other hand, the relationship between Musashi and Kojiro in the first episode is a little complicated because they have something to think about each other. What do they think, how do they communicate with each other, and how do they walk the same path? I would be happy if you could see the beginning.
Saito: It’s true that Kojiro in the first episode may be cold against Musashi (laughs). I also want you to pay attention to Kojiro’s thoughts behind it. Musashi is more of a showcase, and Kojiro tends to hide behind Musashi. However, I think that you can sympathize with Kojiro, who believes in Musashi’s success and gives the best pass. And the second episode that follows is a story that focuses on Kojiro. It’s a very important time to know the heat of a young man named Kojiro, so don’t miss it!
――Finally, do you have a message for your fans?
Saito: Thank you to everyone who was expecting the anime to be broadcast. Musashi’s long and epic journey will begin from now on, but the video, music, and our play will be enjoyed in the best possible way. Not only fans of the original work, but also those who are new to “Orient” in anime, please enjoy it. Personally, I think it’s a work that has originality and universality, such as casual conversations in everyday scenes and facial expressions that characters show at the moment. I would like you to pay attention to the subtleties of the hearts of Musashi, Kojiro, and the attractive characters that will appear in the future.
Uchida: “Orient” is a place where you can enjoy the exciting neo-Sengoku battle action, but it is a work that adults can enjoy, such as the straightforward way of life of the samurai. Please enjoy the rich drama and the exhilarating battle scene. I’m sure you’ll be worried about the continuation and reach out to the original manga (laughs). And I hope you will like “Orient” even more and enjoy the adventure with Musashi and Kojiro.
